C. Loganathan


Chelliah Loganathan was a Ceylon Tamil banker and the first Ceylonese General Manager and Chief Executive of the Bank of Ceylon.

Early life and family

Loganathan was born on 19 September 1913. He was the son of V. Chelliah and Pilawadi Thangamuthu Ammai from Puloly South near Point Pedro in northern Ceylon. He was educated at Victoria College, Chulipuram and Hartley College, Point Pedro. His tertiary education had been at Bombay where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree of the University of London. During his training period at the Barclays Bank, London, he completed the Associate examination of the Institute of Bankers.
Loganathan married Thilagavathy Ammai, daughter of C. Sivasithamparam. They had three sons and three daughters. His son-in-Law A.Tharmaratnam served with the International Financial Corporation of the World Bank. His granddaughter Mythili Raman was the acting United States Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division.

Career

Loganathan started working for the Bank of Ceylon in 1939, soon after the creation of the bank. He was appointed as the first Sri Lankan General Manager and Chief Executive in 1953 at the young age of 39. He continued in that position for 16 years until his premature retirement in 1969.
After his retirement from the bank,Loganathan was appointed as Director/ General Manager of the Development Finance Corporation of Ceylon for two years. In the 1970's he was in Washington DC as Advisor to the World Bank. During that period he was seconded as adviser to the Development Bank of Philippines and as a consultant to the UN Asian Institute for Economic Development and Planning.

Later life

Loganathan was a deeply religious person. He was invited to become the President of the Sri Vallipura Alwar Temple Raja Gopura building committee. He died on 4 May 1981.
