McAlexander rejected an account by Sally Wolff suggesting a friendship of William Faulkner with Edgar Francisco and linked the faulty scholarship with other sloppy academic assertions and politically correct dishonesties such as Ben Affleck's covering up his slaveowner heritage on Henry Louis Gates genealogy show Finding Your Roots.
A review of his book on Peter Taylor in Publishers Weekly describes it as a meticulous account.
