  • In Browder v. Gayle, a United States civil lawsuit resulting from the Montgomery bus boycott, the District Court rules that "the enforced segregation of black and white passengers on motor buses operating in the City of Montgomery violates the Constitution and laws of the United States".
  • Elvis Presley appears on The Milton Berle Show on US television, singing "Hound Dog". It is the first time Presley has appeared on screen without a guitar, and the resulting performance attracts widespread criticism because of his "suggestive" movements.
